I have witnessed the "leave taking" of the Assemblies three times bur none was so spectacular as that on August 3, 1972, in St. Matthews. The birds gathered on Railroad Avenue on 601 on Sunday morning. I watched unbelieving, for an hour. Myriads of lashing purple birds filling every available utility wire with others whirling and diving around them. Later in the afternoon I visited the place of departure again. There were only a few stragglers here and there. On Monday morning the houses were empty and there was a stillness that was almost overcoming.
There is no other living creature to my knowledge that does "All good and no bad", is it any wonder then that we call the purple martin America's most wanted bird.
